Espresso Stout

Posted on October 04, 2007 at 11:51 AM in Our Brews

In the fall of 2003, Midnight Sun Coffee Roasters, a local Whitehorse coffee company that roasts their coffee fresh here in the north, approached us with an idea.  Zola Dore (the Yukon Bean Queen) was enjoying a home brewed espresso stout she was producing at a local U-brew.  Her idea was that Yukon Brewing Company could produce it commercially.  We used this idea to launch a series of beers (if you can call two a series…but who knows what the future will bring) made in partnership with a Yukon company. To say that our brewmaster outdid himself is perhaps not going far enough.  By the time he was finished creating, he had a beer with eight different malts (that’s right, Alice, eight malts) not to mention oatmeal and, of course, espresso coffee.  The result is a beer that is fine as frog’s hair, full bodied yet smooth, rich with coffee aromas and flavours without ever losing sight of the fact that it’s beer.

Dang,

Jus when I found out about MSES (Midnight Sun Espresso Stout) (a mere couple of months ago), and the fact that it was served up in a great and funky 1L Euro style press/flip/allwaysthere/can’tplaycapswithit........what ever the heck it’s called LID, now ya gon an made the bottles smaller. Gosh darn heck, or also known here in Alberta as “_______ the______you buggers”! I must say that the ol say’n “it’s what’s inside that counts” still holds true though, and this beer is worth every penny, an to the last drop as well. Seems a bit ironic that I, from Alberta, had to introduce this beer to my brother who lived in Whitehorse for, oh, about 15 years.  Cold must have got to ‘im

Tasted that Stout and was amazed by it.

Living in Québec city I’m used to see microbrewries trying to do some good stout, but I must admit that Midnight sun is about the best one I ever tasted, being far superior to any commercial or artisanal stout I ever tasted.
