Caffeine in beer, who’d have thunk it?

Well it seems the big boys have decided to “think outside the boxâ€? and create something “first ever in Canadaâ€?. That’s right nobody in Canada has ever offered caffeine in beer before…
Wait a minute; we seem to remember a great beer recently that had caffeine in it. It came out a year and a half ago around November in the Yukon, it sold out in about 3 weeks… …snap!
That’s right, the Midnight Sun Espresso Stout. So what have they done that’s so new? We weren’t even the first to do it. Zola had tried some in Seattle years ago and had been making it herself at the “Wine & Stein. We tried some from a brewery in BC and know of at least one brew pub in Ontario that makes an Espresso Stout. We’ve even seen competitions with a “coffee beer category.
But wait, they aren’t making a “coffee beer, just adding caffeine to beer. That’s new right?
Anyone ever watch the Drew Carey show. BUZZ beer? So we ask again, what are they doing that is so new. Well they are chasing a fad (again. Remember “ICE beer, “Genuine Draft beer, “Dry beer and those tiny cans that came out last year).
Well this new “caffeine beer, made with guarana, same as all of those “energy drinks, seems to be their flavour of the summer. So now if you are having trouble staying awake until last call, or keeping up with your friends, if you need the crutch to keep you in the game, there is a beer here for you. We’re sure it will sell well, and we’re equally sure they’ll spend a ton of money telling you why you have to have it.
The big breweries have described it as a “traditional-tasting lager, with a smooth crisp taste. Sounds just like the other beers they are already selling to us.
If you are interested in a beer that is different and has a unique flavour then you’ll be happy to hear that we have just bottled another run of the Midnight Sun Espresso Stout. The recipe was modified a little bit, so the flavour is a little bit different, but stays true to everything we liked about the beer.
When you try it again, let us know what you think.
